The One Reason every Engineer should work in BigTech

Accepting a job offer in Big Tech can be intimidating.

Even though these companies are cool, accepting a job offer comes with a lot of uncertainty. Oftentimes, you don’t know which team and product you will be working on. Additionally, it can be stressful working on a product where changes impact millions of users and billions of dollars in revenue.

As a result, some engineers think BigTech isn’t for them.

When I had my first job offer in BigTech, I almost didn’t accept it.

There was a lot of uncertainty about which team and product I would work on. Speaking to previous employees, there were mixed reviews about the company. It didn’t make sense for me to leave a job that I was comfortable with.

Even with my uncertainty, one mental framework changed my mind and I accepted my job offer.

I understood that working in BigTech is a reversible decision.

A reversible decision is a decision that can be reversed with minimal or no consequences. Reversible decisions include publishing a blog post, adding a new product feature, or accepting a new job. Once you make one of these decisions, you can always change your mind go back to the way things were.

Working in BigTech is a reversible decision every young engineer should make.

Oftentimes, these companies are great and you may set yourself up for a long, comfortable, and rewarding career. In the case that you don’t like it, you can always get another job outside of BigTech.

Life is short and we shouldn’t agonize over making reversible decisions, especially when they can be rewarding.
